When the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake rattled the eastern Indian Ocean, it generated a tsunami that alerted the world to the destructive nature of these waves. Scientists use a variety of tools to understand the tectonics of the region that generated the tsunami and to establish an early-warning system for the Indian Ocean.
Borehole Seismic Surveys: Beyond the Vertical Profile

Borehole seismic surveys provide much more than time-depth correlation and simple images for comparison with surface seismic sections. With examples from deepwater Gulf of Mexico, onshore Brazil, north Texas and the North Sea, this article describes a number of innovative applications, including look-ahead imaging while drilling, 3D borehole seismic surveys, optimization of hydraulic fracture stimulation, assessment of perforating-gun performance, and high-pressure, high-temperature acquisition.
Rocks Matter: Ground Truth in Geomechanics

Drilling and production activities cause stress changes in reservoir and overburden rock. These rocks vary across a range of lithologies, and each type reacts differently to stress. E&P companies require an understanding of the interactions between rock fabric, in-situ pressures, temperature and other conditions— and geomechanics is key to this understanding. This article describes recent approaches to measuring, modeling and monitoring geomechanics rock properties and their behavior that are helping E&P companies find and produce reserves more efficiently.
Advancing Fluid-Property Measurements

Following the discovery of an oil or gas accumulation, chemists and engineers analyze reservoir-fluid samples to determine the optimal reservoir-management strategy. They identify chemical, rheological or depositional problems that might inhibit or interrupt production. This article surveys the roles of chemistry, geology and thermodynamics in downhole fluid analysis, fluid sampling, laboratory testing and completion design. Also included are case studies that demonstrate how these activities benefit reservoir development, well-completion design and production operations.
