Jean-Philippe
Field Engineer
A drab apartment in Western Siberia might not appeal to everyone. But then not everyone is Jean-Philippe, a Schlumberger drilling services engineer assigned to Usinsk, Russia, near the Arctic Circle.
"It has to be pretty much the ugliest landscape you can think of and the weather is bad," says Jean-Philippe, "but it has its nice side, too."
A Canadian and graduate of McGill University, Montreal, Jean-Philippe joined Schlumberger almost five years ago mostly to escape a career in a cubicle and see the world.
"Most people spend their lives in the same country and get only a glimpse of the outside world as a tourist," he says. "Working internationally for Schlumberger offers a unique opportunity to explore authentic and otherwise inaccessible zones."
Like Usinsk. So what's so nice about this ice-bound town of 10,000 anyway? "It has an interesting culture and language," Jean Philippe points out, "and it's got a hockey rink!"
Something for everyone, eh?
