How Continuous Improvement Lead to the Longest Horizontal Well in The the World

World's Longest Extended-Reach Well Drilled Offshore Qatar, Drilling Contractor July/Aug. 2008 (1.9 MB PDF)

High-quantity, high-resolution MWD/LWD service

The Orion II MWD/LWD system, currently running on TeleScope, SlimPulse, and EcoScope services, supplies more data transmission at a given physical telemetry rate with new compression algorithms downhole. And at the surface, new signal detection and noise cancellation methods demodulate extremely weak signals at high telemetry rates to enhance data quality.

The Orion II service increases the flow of real-time data from LWD and MWD systems. This downhole telemetry platform allows 60 curves at 2 data points per foot at a drilling speed of 250 ft/h, enabling you to make better decisions to land your well in the best place in less time.

More information—further

The high rate of data transmission provided by the Orion II downhole telemetry platform also contributes to drilling your well deeper. The longest well ever drilled, 40,320 ft, used the Orion II system; the downhole signal modulation methods pushed physical mud-pulse telemetry further, delivering rates of 3 bps for 35,000 ft and 1.5 bps from 35,000 ft to TD.

With weakened mud pulse signals transmitted from downhole telemetry platforms in long wellbores, quality well placement decisions are difficult to make. The Orion II telemetry platform optimizes drilling decisions by boosting the quantity and resolution of real-time data.
