"After implementing eSearch, we saw new and improved functionality and search capabilities, but users were skeptical about moving to a new system. The technical support and training were delivered as promised and helped us take advantage of the new eSearch software to find all relevant data quickly.”

"For us, the biggest change was access to all of our data sources…we can see our data from any desktop all over the world, at any time."

Central Project Data Manager,
StatoilHydro

Web-based physical and digital data search and retrieval expedites E&P interpretation process and reduces cost

Challenge

Create an information management (IM) system for different asset data types in a secure environment that provides standardized, efficient, corporate-wide retrieval and reuse of information.

Solution

Implement eSearchTM software system to index and store both physical and digital data with an intuitive, user-friendly graphical interface for easy Web access.

Results

Provided sophisticated search mechanism and standard criteria; improved user satisfaction with increased speed to access data; and eliminated data redundancy, reducing cost.

Manage expanding volumes of data

StatoilHydro, like all large exploration and production (E&P) companies with large international activities, must manage continually expanding volumes of data. In today’s information-rich environment, E&P professionals can spend as much as 60% of their time searching for data, and it is estimated that in any given year, 10% of physical assets are not located in sufficient time to be useful. Out of frustration, end users often take the easy route and repurchase data, which results in high costs and data redundancy.

Historically, StatoilHydro used Iron Mountain’s older-generation asset management application, OpenRSOTM, to manage its technical data inventory assets, which consisted of physical well and seismic data (tape, paper, etc.). An in-house technology review found that the legacy software no longer fit increasingly complex requirements. This led to an investigation into other options for managing data, with quick Web access via a standard browser a top priority.

Deploy a full life cycle data management system

Schlumberger offered the new, enhanced eSearch software from Iron Mountain, Inc. as a viable technology alternative. This application features full asset life cycle data management with a comprehensive warehouse-to-desktop solution—a system that organizes enterprise-wide data from scattered databases into standard data types, stored in one system for quick retrieval. After evaluating the alternatives, StatoilHydro chose to implement the eSearch software.

A team of IM specialists assisted in the migration of all legacy information from OpenRSO to eSearch, and then centrally deployed the application, hosted within Iron Mountain’s highly secure data center. Data exchange between StatoilHydro and the Iron Mountain facilities is protected by all security protocols for the Secure Oil Information Link (SOIL) network.

During the software deployment, training services were also provided to StatoilHydro personnel to facilitate a smooth transition to the new software environment. For instance, users learned how to customize menu options based on their specific workflow requirements and were ready to maximize search capabilities starting on day one. Following implementation, the project team continued to supply technical support services from a nearby European service desk facility to further ensure customer satisfaction and asset management success.

Improve user experience and reduce cost

StatoilHydro achieved the ability to manage both its physical and digital information through the Internet from any desktop in the world. It also gained the ability to easily find specific data via user-defined search criteria, expediting the E&P interpretation process and delivery of data to partners. The improved search and retrieval functionality of this next-generation software not only decreased the time their E&P professionals spent looking for data, it also lessened the need to repurchase data, thus saving money on both accounts. Going forward, the company expects to avoid lost opportunities caused by previous system constraints.
