Coalbed Methane: Clean Energy for the World
As a global resource, coalbed methane holds great potential, and countries with coal deposits are actively pursuing its development. The oil industry is playing a major role in improving the recovery economics of this resource with new technologies for all phases, from evaluation to production. This article presents several recent developments in the evaluation, drilling, completion and production of this unconventional energy supply.
Basin and Petroleum System Modeling
Basin and petroleum system modeling tracks the evolution of a sedimentary basin and its fluids. This article explores the petroleum system concept and describes the types of information required to model the dynamic processes that lead to creation of hydrocarbons and their eventual accumulation. Case studies demonstrate how such modeling helps establish fluid presence and type and assess exploration risk before drilling.
Multiphase Fluid Samples: A Critical Piece of the Puzzle
Reliable metering of multiphase flow has been available for more than a decade. But an inability to capture and analyze representative fluid samples without first separating the phases has, until recently, hindered the full realization of its potential. A new multiphase sampling tool overcomes that hurdle.
Looking Deep into the Reservoir
With an electromagnetic transmitter in one well and an array of receivers in another, a new reservoir monitoring system is helping map the distribution of formation resistivity between wells. The results form the basis for crosswell tomographic images that assist asset managers in locating bypassed pay or mapping flow through a reservoir.
Wellsite Support from Afar
Expansion and increasing technical challenges in the E&P industry create a high demand for oilfield expertise. Hiring enough qualified personnel for the wellsite becomes a difficult undertaking even in a downturn; one solution is to concentrate expert personnel at centralized support facilities.
