Acquisition and Integration of Ødegaard

The value of simultaneous inversion

In May 2006, Schlumberger acquired Ødegaard - a niche Danish company specializing in highly advanced seismic reservoir characterization software and services. Ødegaard earned a very high, worldwide reputation at many levels. At the algorithm level for its leading simultaneous AVO inversion; at the technical level for its highly evolved 3D and 4D rock physics workflows; at the personnel level for its expert geoscientists, and at the business solutions level for its ability to address, impact, and solve complex reservoir geophysical challenges.

Ødegaard technology now forms the core of the Schlumberger Reservoir Seismic Services (RSS) group and Interpretation and Engineering Services (DCS). Bridging these two pillars of technology and expertise penetrates deep into the seismic domain and the reservoir world of borehole logging, geomechanics, and reservoir engineering. Now inversion results become an integral part of reservoir modeling and field development plans carried out by DCS, taking seismic technology deeper and wider into reservoir territory.

ISIS simultaneous AVO inversion software is proven as a highly efficient and effective means of determining rock physical properties from seismic data.

RSS has evolved into the core engine for running seismic reservoir characterization, including the data processing and computing power of Omega software. Added to that, the interactive inversion flexibility of multi-measurement reservoir definition and the interpretation and modeling environment of Petrel Seismic to Simulation Software are part of the RSS suite. Ødegaard workflows and functionality are enabled within WesternGeco data processing and Schlumberger geoscience software?now part of a fully integrated system on the OceanPetrel platform.

What has the integration of Ødegaard done for WesternGeco Q-technology? At the algorithm level, ISIS inversion shows a huge gain by exploiting the enhanced resolution and unmatched signal-to-noise levels of Q data, and it simultaneously inverts multiple Q surveys for 4D. At the technical level, new rock physics workflows have improved the accuracy of extracted reservoir properties, while inversion experts are working closely with WesternGeco and DCS throughout the geophysical continuum.
