PetroMod Petroleum Systems Modeling Software

Reducing exploration risk

Petroleum systems modeling (PSM), also called charge modeling, is a vital component of exploration risk assessment. It is applicable during all stages of exploration, from frontier basins with no well control to well-explored areas. The 3D petroleum systems model includes all of the key elements of geological risk in exploration (the Charge, the Trap, and the Timing of hydrocarbon generation, migration, and loss), and therefore enables rigorous risk analyses.

PetroMod software combines seismic information, well data, and geological knowledge to model the evolution of a sedimentary basin. PetroMod software will predict if, and how, a reservoir has been charged with hydrocarbons, including the source and timing of hydrocarbon generation, migration routes, quantities, and hydrocarbon type in the subsurface or at surface conditions.

Advantages

Modeling technology

  • Most advanced commercially available tool, and the only commercial system with fully PVT-controlled modeling of n-component/3-phase relationships during the entire migration process. Accurately determines hydrocarbon phases in the subsurface (e.g., whether they are in a liquid or vapor phase).
  • Use of flash calculations throughout the entire model and its geologic history to determine the hydrocarbon phase for in situ multicomponent mix, temperatures, and pressures. A direct flash to surface condition for any selected accumulation (known or prospective) to determine API gravities, GOR values, and other properties so that models can be calibrated using known production data.
  • Source rock tracking in 2D and 3D migration modeling.
  • Four migration modeling methods: flowpath, Darcy, invasion percolation, and the unique PetroMod hybrid simulation technology.
  • Most complete range of special modeling tools: salt, igneous intrusion, etc.

Special tools

  • Crustal heat flow tool—ensures higher-quality simulation by ensuring optimal settings for the boundary conditions.
  • Heat flow calibration tool—a fast and effective tool for calibrating 3D models to temperature and vitrinite reflectance measurements. Allows users to calibrate all wells at once.
  • Facies refinement tool—directly incorporates high-resolution facies distributions based on seismic data into a model. Especially useful for, e.g., high-detailed reservoir characterization.
  • Local grid refinement tool—enables users to generate a locally defined, high-resolution model within a larger PetroMod model.

Add-ons

  • PetroRisk risk management system module—unique risk management system enables effects of uncertainties in specific types of geologic input data to be determined and statistically evaluated.
  • TecLink 2D or 3D—unique option enables users to load sections and paleo-sections from structural modeling packages.
  • BioPetS Risk—integrated tool quantifies potential effects of biodegradation.
  • Phase Kinetics Wizard—extensive kinetics database.

Plug-ins

  • Petrel PetroMod Data Exchange Plug-in: Construct PetroMod input models directly from Petrel data models and view PetroMod output data in Petrel software for a fully integrated analysis of all available data.
