Heavy oil reservoirs in Canada.

Displacing conventional production

In Western Canada, oilsands projects are displacing conventional oil production as the primary source of hydrocarbon supply. One major producer in Peace River, Alberta, was able to increase production through the use of multilateral wells.

The producer chose the Schlumberger RapidTieback multilateral technology. This technology combined with cyclic steam injection achieved environmentally and economically sound recovery of bitumen heavy oil.

Steam lowers the viscosity of the heavy oil allowing it to enter the wellbore more easily. The challenge in this 30 m (100 ft) thick formation was to accommodate four closely stacked lateral sections in a vertical primary wellbore. A design involving short radius boreholes achieved additional reservoir penetration while maintaining an economically viable completion. Use of multilateral wells decreased overall development cost by reducing the required infrastructure such as steam lines and generators, gathering lines, wellheads, and the number of wells. The project resulted in a six-fold production increase.
