Schlumberger Opens Reservoir Completions Manufacturing Center
in Saudi Arabia
Facility Offers Flexibility in Manufacturing and Custom Design through Collaboration in Technology Development
DHAHRAN, 6 October 2009 – Schlumberger announced today the opening of the new reservoir completions manufacturing center in Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The new center, located in the Dammam Industrial City represents an investment of approximately $25M in state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, facility lease and inventory and houses a team of design and manufacturing engineers specialized in the production of customized downhole reservoir completions equipment. More particularly, the center provides a collaborative environment in which joint oil company and Schlumberger teams can develop and manufacture completions solutions for applications across the range of reservoir types found in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
During the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Zuhair A. Al-Hussain, vice president of the Saudi Aramco Drilling and Workover Department remarked, "I congratulate Schlumberger on this investment which emphasizes that you take your investment in technology at the local level here in Saudi Arabia very seriously, as well as your corporate social responsibility to develop local talent that is aligned with that of Saudi Aramco as the national oil company of Saudi Arabia."
Manufacturing operations will begin with a number of products for immediate application in Saudi Arabia. These include single wire-wrapped screens with a unique shrink-fit design, inflow control devices for production wells, and injection control devices to control the profile of water injection wells. Many of these technologies have already been successfully installed based on joint efforts between Saudi Aramco and Schlumberger to achieve maximum reservoir contact and associated production goals.
Commenting on the opening, Doug Pferdehirt, president of Schlumberger Reservoir Production group remarked, "In support of our customer’s objective to seek maximum reservoir contact, we are excited about the opening of a facility that will provide the equipment to optimize production in long horizontal wells and to maximize reservoir recovery using novel completion concepts. With this plant Schlumberger is extending its commitment to Saudi Arabia through the development of human resources, customized manufacturing and joint research and technology projects."
The center is the first true manufacturing facility of its kind in Saudi Arabia. As part of the global Schlumberger technology organization, the center will draw on expertise and support from the company’s worldwide network of 20 research and engineering facilities in 12 countries. In addition, the nearby Schlumberger Dhahran Carbonate Research Center will be available to provide key technology insight and support.
