Case Study: Det Norske Set Multiple Well Construction Records with Integrated Development Plan, Norwegian North Sea

The operator defined and exceeded operational milestones in the ongoing Ivar Aasen field development program

Challenge: Develop the Ivar Aasen field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea while operating the best-performing rig on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).

Solution: Integrate drilling, reservoir characterization, and completions disciplines with Det norske by establishing an in-house team to conduct early and extended project engagement alongside the customer.

Result: Achieved or exceeded all predrilling milestones, delivering twice as many wells as planned within the given timeframe; remained on schedule to start production as planned before year-end 2016.

Develop North Sea field following established timeline

Det norske operates the Ivar Aasen field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Ivar Aasen is Det norske’s first significant, large-scale field development. For optimal project delivery, it was important to establish clear operational milestones. The goal set out by Det norske was to operate the best-performing rig on the NCS.

Promote operational synergies and efficiencies through integration

In this project, a “One Team” approach was implemented, meaning that all team members were encouraged to be proactive, share information across disciplines, and take ownership of and pride in the project. To improve communications and efficiency, key Schlumberger personnel were integrated into the Det norske office, working alongside the operator’s Drilling and Wells and Subsurface teams. In a similar manner, senior field personnel were assigned to work offshore alongside Det norske and rig personnel. Drilling analysts provided additional operational support from the office. The broad scope of work required support from many Schlumberger disciplines, including project management, drilling and measurements, bits and drilling tools, fluids and environmental services, wireline, well services, geomechanics, and completions.

Achieve or exceed significant project milestones

The project successfully met or exceeded all targets for the initial phase of development while setting new drilling and completions performance standards on the NCS. Ongoing operations will add one water injector and one oil producer to the total number of wells drilled and completed in the predrilling phase. While remaining on schedule, the number of wells drilled and completed will be nine, more than double the original four planned for this phase.
