High-build-rate RSS delivers 7°/30-m-DLS well in one run, eliminating whipstock operation and BHA trips, Siberia

Challenge: Optimize well placement by drilling 7°/30-m well while mitigating torque and drag issues.

Solution: Develop a multidisciplinary integrated BHA that combined Schlumberger drilling technologies and solutions from Smith Bits and M-I SWACO as well as expert support throughout project.

Result:

  • Drilled the section in a single run, achieving 625 m in 21 drilling hours.
  • Sidetracked sharp 7°/30-m dogleg severity (DLS) from cement and geosteered in the horizontal section, eliminating a whipstock operation and alleviating torque and drag concerns.
  • Saved 3 days off plan and USD 250,000 by eliminating a whipstock operation and additional BHA runs.

Ensure high production rates by enhancing well placement

Vankorneft was developing an eastern Siberia field using injection, slanted, and producing wells with horizontal end sections. A main objective of the project was ensuring high production by optimizing well placement. After one of the wells was stopped short because the productive formation was saturated with gas, not oil, service providers began offering corrective trajectories. However, the operator declined them all because they required setting the whipstock high inside the casing and losing the ESP zone. A sharp 7°/30-m dogleg directly beneath the casing shoe was proposed to penetrate the targets—a strategy that would not allow running a motor or conventional RSS because of torque and drag concerns as well as the risk of not achieving the required DLS.

Run single-trip solution featuring PowerDrive Archer RSS

Local Schlumberger teams collaborated with Vankorneft and proposed using the PowerDrive Archer 475 high-build-rate RSS to sidetrack and drill the planned trajectory in a single run. Running this highly reliable hybrid steering system would eliminate whipstock operations, reduce BHA trips, and decrease MD before the landing point. The team also suggested enhancing geosteering using MWD data acquired by the ImPulse 475 integrated MWD platform, adnVISION 475 azimuthal density neutron service, and neutron porosity services. The slimhole combination enabled Vankorneft to optimally land the section.

Engineers from Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company, qualified a project-specific 6-in PDC bit design (MDi413LKPX) using the IDEAS integrated drillbit design platform. Additionally, M-I SWACO experts designed FLOTHRU reservoir drill-in fluid with minimal solids to provide excellent hole cleaning and a thin filtercake while drilling horizontal reservoir sections in high-DLS environments.

This operation marked the first run of Power Drive Archer 475 RSS in Russia. Vankorneft drilled the section in a single run, achieving 625 m in 21 drilling hours. The sidetrack was performed from the cement, drilled at the sharp 7°/30-m DLS, and geosteered in the horizontal section. The operator saved 3 days against plan and USD 250,000 by eliminating a whipstock operation and additional BHA runs.
