Case Study: High-Build-Rate RSS Saves KPO 7 Days on Four Wells in West Kazakhstan

PowerDrive Archer RSS and PDC bit increase ROP 33% in drilling campaign

Challenge: Drill 8 1/2-in low-tortuosity buildup sections in one run.

Solution: Design and deploy a fit-for-purpose BHA that includes PowerDrive Archer high build rate rotary steerable system fitted with an MDi616 PDC drill bit to improve drilling performance.

Result:

  • Drilled four 8 1/2-in sections shoe to shoe in one run each, saving 7 days of rig time.
  • Increased ROP 33% compared with the best offset ROP.
  • Set PowerDrive Archer RSS records for the longest run at 1,538 m and the most hours in a single run—260 circulating hours and 188 drilling hours.

Drill low-tortuosity buildup sections in West Kazakhstan 

Karachaganak Petroleum Operating (KPO) wanted to improve drilling performance for its 2014 drilling campaign in West Kazakhstan, where sliding had reduced ROP in earlier drilling campaigns in which motors had been used. The objective was to drill 8 1/2-in curve sections 1.5 km in one run and reduce construction time. Schlumberger selected PowerDrive Archer high build rate RSS fitted with an MDi616 PDC drill bit from Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company, to drill the high-dogleg trajectories at high ROP. 

Deliver high-quality wellbores with DLS of 6°/30 m 

The fully rotating PowerDrive Archer RSS enabled kicking off deeper and maintaining verticality while reducing friction and tortuosity in the buildup sections with dogleg severity (DLS) of 6°/30 m. The system increased ROP, provided push-the-bit trajectory control with no sliding, and delivered high-quality wellbores.

Improved ROP and saved 7 days 

PowerDrive Archer RSS drilled each 8 1/2-in section in one run, saving a total of 7.2 rig days over the four wells. All four wells were drilled using an RSS in all well sections. The first section drilled using the PowerDrive Archer RSS was drilled faster than previous motor runs in the field; the 8 1/2-in section was drilled 1,119 m in one run at a total of 188 drilling hours and an average on-bottom ROP of 5.9 m/h. This well was the first ever in the field drilled from top to bottom using only RSS technology. 

The entire 1,538-m 8 1/2-in section of the second well was drilled in one run at an average on-bottom ROP of 9.7 m/h. On this well, approximately 1,000 m were drilled in vertical mode, which had never before been attempted. 

PowerDrive Archer RSS set records in this campaign for the long run at 1,538 m and for the most hours drilled in a single run at 260 circulating hours and 188 drilling hours.
