Challenge: Acquire high-quality sonic compressional and shear data in horizontal well; enable geosteering in the sweet spot while drilling.

Solution: Use SonicScope multipole sonic-while-drilling service to provide high-quality, real-time compressional and shear data; combine PowerDrive X5 rotary steerable system, ImPulse gamma ray log, and PeriScope bed boundary mapper to steer horizontal section and maximize ROP.

Result: Successfully acquired high-quality sonic data both while drilling and in real-time; identified sweet spot zones for efficient drilling and best reservoir quality; maximized ROP in lateral section with average of 60 ft/h.

Enable geosteering while drilling

An operator drilling in a tight reservoir needed to acquire high-quality compressional and shear data in a horizontal well to optimize hydraulic fracturing and enable accurate geosteering in the sweet spot while drilling.

Defined sweet spot, optimized drilling performance

The SonicScope service was combined with the PowerDrive rotary steerable system, ImPulse gamma ray log, and PeriScope bed boundary mapper to steer the horizontal 2,500-ft lateral section.

Real-time sonic compressional and shear data were used to complement the geosteering solution, providing sonic porosity and Vp/Vs ratio to evaluate the sweet spot while drilling.

Over more than 2,500 ft of the lateral section, 95% of the real-time data were sampled in recorded mode while combining the PowerDrive X5, ImPulse, and PeriScope tools at an average drilling ROP of 60 ft/h.

SonicScope data correlated with the PeriScope analysis clearly defined the sweet spot zone for optimal drilling performance. By drilling in the sweet spot, shock and vibrations were mitigated.
