Case Study: Petrobras Saves 3 Drilling Days Using Rhino XC Reamer in Unstable Presalt Formation

On-demand hydraulically actuated reamer successful enlarges 823-m section in challenging deepwater well, Brazil

Challenge: Drill and underream a 16-in × 17 1/2-in tangent section in an unstable offshore halite salt formation.

Solution: Use the Rhino XC on-demand hydraulically actuated reamer to successfully enlarge the 823-m section.

Result:

  • Enlarged 823 m of a 1,968-m directional section at an average ROP of 15 m/h.
  • Underreamed the section with zero NPT and no stuck pipe incidents during the drilling operation.
  • Completed the operation in 7 days, saving 3 drilling days compared with previous offset wells drilled without using an underreamer.
  • Drill a deepwater tangent section though complex halite formation

    While drilling previous directional wells in the Lula oil field offshore Brazil, Petrobras experienced multiple wellbore stability issues caused by an unstable swelling salt formation. Because of the wellbore instability, the operator experienced complications while drilling and tripping out of the hole with a 17 1/2-in drilling BHA. To mitigate these issues, the operator sought to underream a 16-in × 17 1/2-in tangent section to successfully complete the well, avoiding the need to backream after each stand and mitigating the possibility of the drilling BHA becoming stuck in the halite formation.

    Use Rhino XC reamer to achieve drilling objectives

    Schlumberger engineers recommended the Rhino XC reamer for fast activation and reliable borehole enlargement. The Rhino XC on-demand reamer provides unlimited cutter block activation via fast, effective flow actuation, for complete control of reamer performance from the surface. The reamer can be placed anywhere in the drillstring for increased operational flexibility. Because the reamer achieves larger hole sizes, Petrobras could also obtain more clearance and maintain a high ROP throughout the operation.

    Saved 3 drilling days, maintained high ROP

    The underreamer drilled unactivated for the first 1,245 m of the tangent section while maintaining 20-m/h ROP at reduced vibration levels. The Rhino XC reamer was activated at 4,404-m MD when the halite package was reached and underreamed the 823-m section at an ROP of 17 m/h. When TD was reached, the Rhino XC reamer was deactivated. Petrobras achieved an average ROP of 15 m/h and completed the operation in 7 days, saving 3 drilling days on the drillship compared with previous offset wells drilled without an underreamer. The operator experienced zero NPT and no stuck pipe incidents, and the BHA and Rhino XC cutter blocks were pulled out of hole with no excessive drag.
