Sidetracking with cement plug is slow and unreliable

With traditional cement plug sidetracking, a significant amount of rig time is spent waiting for the cement plug to cure (approximately 24 h), and then time-drilling through the cement at a low ROP to achieve departure. Formation compressive strength, downhole temperature and pressure, wellbore deviation, and quality of cement are among the many factors affecting the success of the plug. Multiple attempts are frequently required, involving extra time and materials, and reconfiguration of the drilling trajectory.

TrackMaster OH-C system provides an alternative

TrackMaster OH-C openhole whipstock and cementing system circumvents all the obstacles encountered with conventional cement plug sidetracking. By orienting the whipstock, hydraulically setting the anchor at an optimal depth, and using the 3°steel ramp of the whipstock to provide deflection, the system maximizes the probability of sidetracking successfully on the first attempt. Cement is pumped through the tool to isolate the lower zone, but there is no need to wait for it to dry before running in with the directional drilling BHA, establishing the desired borehole trajectory and drilling ahead. Faster run in hole speeds are possible because there is no packer, while the large ID of the tool enables a higher rate of pumping cement.

Economics and efficiency of sidetracking improve

Over 40 jobs have been successfully completed in multiple US basins. The expandable anchor technology has proven to be a reliable choice for openhole sidetracking, and considerable rig time was saved by the cementing whipstock. Both PDC and roller cone bits were used to sidetrack and drill ahead.
