Challenge: A major international operator wanted to determine the value of replacing three standard shaker units with two M-I SWACO MONGOOSE shakers. A test compared shaker performance in terms of flow capacity, dryness of cuttings and time savings.
Solution: In August 2004, M-I SWACO installed two MONGOOSE shakers over holding tanks on a land rig and connected them to a manifold carrying fluid evenly to both shakers.
A number of shaker performance parameters were monitored closely in the course of drilling 15 wells. These included solids-removal effectiveness, dryness of cuttings (WOC), flow capacity, screen life, shaker motion analysis, and the cost of drilling fluids used. This information was compared to historical data generated from the standard shakers used on previous wells in the same area.
Result: Test results obtained while drilling the last 15 wells confirmed the superior performance of the MONGOOSE shakers, which successfully handled the same circulating fluid volume as the three standard shakers used previously. The MONGOOSE shakers operated normally with screens of 140 mesh during 12¼-in. drilling intervals with a flow rate of 460 gal/min and a drilling rate of 63.6 ft/hr (19.4 m/hr). The MONGOOSE shakers also worked normally with screens of 210-250 mesh during the 8¾-in. intervals with a flow rate of 450 gal/min and a drilling rate of 63.6 ft/hr (19.4 m/hr).
Dryness of cuttings measured 37.84 %w/w, resulting in 8% waste reduction and 20 m3 (5,283 gal)/well of drilling mud saved. This combined for an average savings of $18,156 per well.
The 15-well program in the Puesto Hernández field only required four screens, compared to the 45 screens consumed for the same number of wells drilled with the standard shakers. Screen savings amounted to $17,835.
The ability to convert the motion of the MONGOOSE shaker from linear to elliptical helped reduce fluid loss by 8%. Average mud cost was $2,570 less than that for the wells using standard shakers.
New tensioning technology, coupled with shaker motion flexibility, maximizes the MONGOOSE shaker’s performance. Motion adjustability also allows quicker elliptically induced solids removal during the 8¾-in. intervals, lower G force, and improved mud recovery with fewer screens.
At the request of a major international operator, tests were carried out to compare six
performance parameters of three standard shaker units with two M-I SWACO MONGOOSE
PT shakers. Data generated by the MONGOOSE PT shakers indicated beneficial increases in
performance in all six categories when compared with historical data produced by standard
shakers during operation in the same specified area.
