Case Study: FAZEPRO System Enables Drilling and Completion of Long-Reach Injection Laterals in North Slope, Alaska

Challenge: Run a drilling fluid with high lubricity to drill and complete extended-reach wells offshore Alaska’s North Slope.

Solution: Use FAZEPRO reversible invert-emulsion reservoir drill-in fluid system and develop a FAZE-AWAY reversible invert-emulsion filtercake breaker system to remove filtercake deposits to ensure proper injection placement.

Deploy lubricious filtercake for lower completion assemblies

An operator planned to combine monitoring, isolation, and injection-control equipment to enhance understanding of injection behavior in two shallow extended-reach wells offshore Alaska’s North Slope. The wells would be drilled with laterals of 4,605 ft [1,404 m] and 6,723 ft [2,049 m] and required the lubricity of an invert-emulsion drilling fluid to provide efficient drilling and installation of the lower completion assemblies. The lower completions were designed to evenly distribute the injection across the length of the laterals. However, the filtercake deposited by a conventional invert-emulsion drilling fluid would prevent direct injection.

Select proper reservoir drill-in fluid and build an invert-emulsion breaker

The operator chose the FAZEPRO system to address the lubricity, environmental, and other drilling requirements as well as to facilitate installation of the lower completion assemblies. To ensure direct injection, the operator also needed a breaker system specially formulated to provide sufficient delay before breakthrough to allow spotting in the openhole lateral prior to running the liner and lower completion assemblies.

M-I SWACO initiated a program to formulate a breaker for the FAZEPRO system that would provide the necessary delay. Following a series of laboratory tests, a FAZE-AWAY reversible invert-emulsion breaker system was formulated for openhole placement along the lateral prior to inserting the completion assemblies.

Deliver trouble-free drilling and completion with reservoir drill-in fluid, breaker combo

The FAZEPRO system was used to drill the 8 1/2-in long-reach horizontal sections of both wells with mechanical friction factors between 0.20 and 0.24, which are substantially lower than those of a conventional oil-base mud. During completion, the friction factors tracked lower than the theoretical values. Further, the FAZE-AWAY system promoted swelling of the isolation packers and exhibited a controlled 8-day delay prior to filtercake breakthrough. The integrated solution enabled exceptional injection rates and efficient well completions.
