Case Study: KLA-SHIELD System Provides Impressive Inhibition Performance Through Deepwater Clay Formations

WBM system provides wellbore stability and hole cleaning for Repsol

Challenge: Drill a deepwater wildcat exploration well in an environmentally sensitive area offshore Canary Islands.

Solution: Use a KLA-SHIELD high-performance water-base mud (WBM) system to provide excellent inhibition.

Result: Achieved excellent drilling results through all sections of the well with no NPT, no recorded bit or BHA balling, and no major fluid issues.

Repsol needed an inhibitive fluid system to drill a deepwater wildcat exploration well offshore Canary Islands, a remote location with no available offset information. The project had a very high profile because of the environmentally sensitive location and the area’s tourism-based economy. Drilling a vertical well was not possible because of the low pore-fracture pressure window for penetrating the primary reservoir in an unknown exploration setting, with the primary and secondary targets on the flank of a salt diapir.
