Case Study: Operator Saves 1.6 Days, Mitigates Sticking with Enhanced Polymer Drilling Fluid Offshore Vietnam

KLA-SHIELD drilling fluid system enables three incident-free logging runs.

Challenge: Avoid stuck pipe incidents and shale inhibition while drilling unconventional reservoir offshore Vietnam.

Solution:

  • Conduct shale inhibition testing in regional lab and analyze well samples at M-I SWACO Houston Technology Center.
  • Inhibit swelling and dispersion of clay with KLA-SHIELD enhanced-polymer water-base drilling fluid system.

Result:

  • Saved 1.6 days by avoiding stuck pipe incidents and the need to recover logging tools.
  • Enabled three logging runs in the 12 1/2-in interval without hole stability issues.
  • Produced well-defined, uniform, dry cuttings in the 12 1/4-in section
  • Provided a full-gauge wellbore with no washouts, allowing better caliper logging runs.

Improve hole cleaning and stability to avoid stuck pipe incidents

An operator drilled three wells offshore Vietnam using an 8% potassium chloride polymer drilling mud. In the 12 1/4-in hole section of all three wells, the operator observed tight spots during trips while pumping out at the end of the section. As a result, several wiper trips were required to clean the hole prior to pulling out of hole for logging. During extensive logging operations at the end of the section, hole cleaning and stability conditions deteriorated, and the logging tools frequently became stuck, forcing the operator to conduct fishing operations to recover logging tools. The operator wanted to avoid these costly issues in future wells.

Use KLA-SHIELD system to inhibit clay swelling and dispersion

To determine the most effective inhibitive mud composition, M-I SWACO recommended shale inhibition testing of samples from Well 2 and Well 3 followed by laboratory testing of fracture development at the M-I SWACO Houston Technology Center.

As a result of inhibition testing, KLA-SHIELD enhanced-polymer water-base drilling fluid system was selected because the fluid properties met all of the operator’s criteria.

The KLA-SHIELD system is engineered with multiple inhibition mechanisms, powered by KLA-STOP liquid polyamine shale additive as the primary inhibitor and IDCAP D polymeric shale inhibitor as the encapsulating polymer.

Saved 1.6 days and completed three logging runs without incident

Using the KLA-SHIELD system, the operator reached TD of the 12 1/4-in section of Well 4 and subsequently completed three logging runs without any hole stability issues. As a result of avoiding stuck pipe and associated issues experienced in offset wells, the operator saved 1.6 days.

In contrast with Well 3, the shale cuttings from Well 4 were uniform and well defined, showing no signs of caving. The KLA-SHIELD system effectively inhibited the formation, providing a full-gauge hole for logging runs free of washout enlargements.
