Case Study: Continuous Monitoring Software Optimizes Hole Cleaning in 7,926-ft Lateral Offshore Malaysia

Challenge: Optimize hole cleaning to avoid overloading the annulus with cuttings and to mitigate packoff, stuck pipe, and other potential complications while drilling a 7,926-ft [2,416-m], 16-in lateral well offshore.

Result: Made real-time decisions, adjusted operating parameters, and optimized hole cleaning in the long lateral.

An operator was drilling a well offshore Malaysia and sought to mitigate packoff, stuck pipe, and other potential issues in a 16-in, 7,926-ft lateral. The PRESSPRO RT software from M-I SWACO was selected to provide information on hole cleaning during drilling. The software includes exceptional remote and wellsite engineering support using surface measurements to calculate downhole pressure profiles and fluid properties in real time during drilling, tripping, and other critical operations.
