Challenge: Prevent fracture propagation by managing equivalent circulating density (ECD) while drilling an openhole section through a depleted formation with a lowest-expected fracture gradient of 12 ppg.

Solution: Use PRESSPRO RT and VIRTUAL HYDRAULICS software to continuously monitor and simulate hole conditions in real time.

Result: Saved a trip out of hole through guided decision making, enabling a trouble-free operation with no losses.

Operator Talisman Malaysia Ltd targeted the West Bunga I-60L gas reservoir on the BRB-1ST1 well but faced the challenge of managing ECD while drilling through the depleted I-23 formation sand. The hole was opened to 9 ¼ in from 8 ½ in for ECD management and effective zonal isolation. The lowest expected fracture gradient for the sand was 12-ppg effective mud weight (EMW).
