Performance Report: Saudi Arabia: Safe-Scav HS Greatly Reduces H2S Treatment Costs on Coil Tubing Drilling Project

Challenge: The operator required an efficient, low cost solution for treating the high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) expected on the onshore well.

Solution: M-I SWACO recommended the operator employ SAFE-SCAV HS H2S, a liquid, brine soluble scavenger, which remains soluble after reacting with H2S. Based on an organic chemical rather than the typical zinc- or iron-base compound, it provides a solids-free solution to H2S intrusion. SAFE-SCAV HS chemically “ties up” the H2S in an irreversible reaction.

Result: The recorded volume of H2S was more than 4.5% (45,000 ppm). SAFE-SCAV HS was injected directly in the waste water stream to maintain a consistent average sulfides reading below 100 ppm before being discharged. At no time during the field trial were the H2S alarms activated at the waste pit. The consistent target readings after treatment were achieved by accurate measurement of sulfides and quick reaction time of SAFE-SCAV HS.
