Case Study: Innovative BHA Used to Perforate and Condition Well in One Run Saves USD 200,000 and 16 Hours’ Rig Time

Challenge: Perform tubing-conveyed perforation (TCP), downhole test, and cleanup with bit, scraper, and magnet in one trip.

Solution: Build a unique BHA string to effectively combine TCP, downhole test, and cleanup trip.

Result: Ran perforation, test, and cleanup trips together in one run, saving USD 200,000 and 16 h of rig time.

Conventional completion strategy required two runs

An operator in the Far East had used the same completion technology for years. Conventionally, a completion involved perforating followed by a separate run to clean up the wellbore from perforation debris and burrs on the casing to prevent damage to the completion packer when passing through the perforated interval. The BHA typically consisted of a drill bit, scraper, and magnets run between the perforating and well-completion phases. Running two separate trips was a time consuming and costly process, and the operator began assessing alternative techniques.

Unique BHA designed and proposed

Schlumberger consulted with the operator and designed a unique tool configuration in which the downhole test and TCP assembly could be run in a wiper trip with a bit, scraper, and magnet. A risk assessment by Schlumberger evaluated the probability of getting stuck downhole and mitigated potential associated concerns. To meet the customer’s objectives, Schlumberger configured a new BHA specifically designed to perforate and clean the well.

Single run saved 16 h of rig time and USD 200,000

The well was successfully perforated and conditioned in one trip before running the completion assembly. The entire operation resulted in significant savings in operating time and rig cost. The customer estimated that about USD 200,000 and 16 h of rig time were saved by using the new assembly, and a total of 7 kg of metal debris was recovered in the cleanup.
