Case Study: Production Exceeds PetroAmazonas Estimates by 63% After Using Extra Deep Penetrating Shaped Charges

PURE perforating system for clean perforations and PowerJet Nova shaped charges effectively penetrate dual casing string

Challenge: Maximize productivity for a well in Palo Azul field that was completed unconventionally with a 5-in and 7-in dual casing string.

Solution: Increase formation penetration with PowerJet Nova extra deep penetrating shaped charges and PURE perforating system for clean perforations.

Result: Flowed 327 bbl/d of oil, 63% above operator’s estimates.

Optimum perforation system required for dual casing string

PetroAmazonas used a dual casing string consisting of 5-in and 7-in casings instead of the usual single 7-in string for the Napo T sand on Palo Azul 26, a 37° deviated well in Ecuador. The optimal perforation system had to be determined for maximum target penetration.

Extra deep, clean penetration provided by PowerJet Nova charges and PURE system

SPAN Rock stressed-rock perforating analysis indicated that PowerJet Nova extra deep penetrating shaped charges would be the most effective solution. These charges were combined with tubing-conveyed HSD high shot density guns and the PURE perforating system, which optimizes the well dynamic underbalance—the transient underbalance just after creation of the perforation cavity. The PURE system, therefore, does not rely on a large static pressure differential between the formation and the wellbore to remove perforation debris, creating clean and stable perforation tunnels with minimum perforation damage. The PowerJet Nova charge improves the efficiency of explosive energy transfer into the perforating jet using an optimized stressed-rock charge design that dramatically increases penetration and hence, productivity.

Oil production exceeded estimates by 63%

The perforated intervals were 11,186–11,206 ft and 11,212–11,230 ft, with a maximum downhole temperature of 232 degF. The well flowed 327 bbl/d of oil, 63% more than PetroAmazonas had expected, validating the choice of perforating system and charges.
