Challenge: Secure and extend the life of depleted onshore wells by installing a suitable fail-safe system controlled from the surface, without the intervention of a workover rig.
Solution: Use the GEM-Valve wireless surface-controlled subsurface safety valve (SCSSV) to seal off water-producing zones and avoid production losses.
Result: Successfully extended the life of the well while avoiding the cost of a workover—no production losses and no time lost on pumping operations.
Operating costs for a well were high because of water disposal problems, making production unviable. The normally open velocity and ambient valves in place were no longer acceptable, as unstable flowing conditions did not allow accurate and repetitive closure. No control line was available to install a hydraulic valve.
The existing subsurface safety valves (SSVs) were replaced with the GEM-Valve retrievable wireless SCSSV. No workover or wellhead modification was required, and the fail-safe valve allowed repetitive closures. Production was stopped for less than 2 hours to install the GEM-Valve SCSSV at a depth of 70 ft. Original flowing conditions were resumed shortly after reopening the well.
The flexibility of the surface installation made it possible to integrate this valve into the existing electric surface emergency shutdown (ESD) safety system. All the wells in this field were equipped with GEM-Valve safety valves.
