Case Study: Badr Petroleum Saves USD 30,000 Using Custom Bit to Drill Abrasive, Interbedded Formation

Bit incorporating ONYX 360 cutters and Stinger elements drills record run with average ROP of 3.7 m/h, Egypt

Challenge: Drill a minimum of 150 m through highly abrasive sandstone that is interbedded with shale before switching to a diamond-impregnated bit to reach section TD.

Solution: Use a custom-designed bit that incorporates ONYX 360 rolling PDC cutters and Stinger conical diamond elements.

Result: Drilled a record-setting run of 288 m with ROP averaging 3.7 m/h and an inclination ranging between 5.75° and 1.78°, saving USD 30,000.

Drill through tough, interbedded formation

Drilling in the Kharita Formation, Badr Petroleum Company (Bapetco) encountered very abrasive sandstone interbedded with shale. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) in the formation ranged between 18,000 and 25,000 psi, reaching up to 30,000 psi in some intervals. A drilling run using a PDC bit reached 97 m, and the remaining interval had to be drilled with a diamond-impregnated bit. Based on these results, Bapetco’s plan was to use a rolling-cutter PDC bit to drill at least 150 m before deploying a diamond-impregnated bit to complete the section.

Design bit with ONYX 360 cutters and Stinger elements

Smith Bits designed a bit incorporating ONYX 360 cutters and Stinger elements for the first drilling run. The ONYX 360 cutter substantially increases PDC bit durability by revolving 360°, enabling use of the entire diamond edge while drilling the formation. Including Stinger elements across the bit face would increase footage and ROP while improving toolface control and minimizing shock.

Eliminated run and saved USD 30,000

The bit achieved outstanding performance and established a record run in the field, where it drilled the section to TD and ultimately eliminated the need for a dedicated diamond-impregnated bit run. The custom-designed bit drilled 288 m, with ROP averaging 3.7 m/h and an inclination ranging between 5.75° and 1.78°.

Bapetco saved approximately USD 30,000 and achieved the lowest cost per meter drilled compared with costs associated with offset wells.
