Case Study: After 300 Circulating Hours, Rhino XC Reamer Completes North Sea Reaming Operation

In one trip, reamer enlarges 9,283-ft section from 9 1/2 to 10 1/4 in

Challenge: Enlarge a 9,283-ft section from 9 1/2 to 10 1/4 in under conditions that require a reamer to endure long circulation periods.

Solution: Run the Rhino XC on-demand reamer with ONYX PDC cutters, which can be reliably activated and deactivated during long periods of circulation.

Result: Using the Rhino reamer, a 9,283-ft section was enlarged from 9 1/2 to 10 1/4 in during 300 circulating hours.

An operator working in the North Sea wanted to underream a section greater than 9,000 ft in the waters off the coast of Norway under challenging conditions. The application would require the reamer to be activated and deactivated repeatedly to close annular access. Borehole conditions included the potential for kick and losses. Additionally, at a certain point during the test, the operator required the complete deactivation of the reamer’s cutter blocks to ensure that the casing shoe would remain set at the correct depth.

For the operation, a Rhino XC on-demand reamer with ONYX PDC cutters was used. The reamer is capable of being reliably activated and deactivated during long circulation times. It can also be surface tested to check and confirm settings and ensure performance prior to being run in the hole.

During 300 circulating hours, the 9,813-ft section was enlarged from 9 1/2 to 10 1/4 in. Post-operational analysis of the run indicated the reamer performed perfectly, meeting all the operational objectives of the application. Upon inspection, the Rhino XC reamer was found to be fully functional and its ONYX cutters graded excellent.
