Accurate water cuts were needed for multiple wells producing to a common station

To acquire all-important flow rate measurements at production stations, operators frequently separate and measure each phase using large two- or three-phase separators. Water flow rates, however, are usually calculated by manually measuring basic sediment and water a few times during the separation process, then estimating water flow rate as a portion of the total liquid flow rate.

Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) wanted higher-quality measurements so that true water cuts could be determined for the multiple wells in fields that pump large volumes to central production stations in western Venezuela.

Two PhaseTester systems were configured in parallel to measure water cut and total liquid flow

To handle the high volumes of liquid flowing through the production stations, two 52-mm PhaseTester systems were configured in parallel at the liquid outlet of the separator. To prevent pressure problems for the station pumps, PhaseTester connections were specially designed to direct flow without creating a restriction in the production line.

Vx technology enabled accurate measurement of large volumes of fluctuating water and oil production, without requiring stabilization, by measuring flow every 22 ms. The water cuts and total liquid flow rates from multiple wells were measured with PhaseTester equipment at three separate production stations, and the accuracy of the measurements was confirmed by separator or manual measurements at each station.

PDVSA credited this innovative application of PhaseTester equipment with Vx multiphase well testing technology for providing accurate data that has contributed to a better understanding of actual reservoir behavior.
