The main technical challenge in today’s unconventional shale plays lies in unraveling the subtle, yet critical variations in reservoir properties that control production. To do so, savvy shale players are acquiring more data and doing better science earlier in the game. For example, Southwestern Energy teamed up with Schlumberger petrotechnical specialists to characterize reservoir heterogeneities in the Fayetteville Shale of northern Arkansas. The joint company team developed a comprehensive, multidisciplinary seismic-to-simulation workflow, which offers other operators a model for identifying zones of high reservoir quality over large areas, predicting future performance, designing better completions, and maximizing return on investment.
