Reducing risk to maximize drilling performance

Having completed two successful campaigns with Salamander Energy using traditional downhole motors, Schlumberger provided a new set of technologies and services to help the operator meet its goal of growing production and increasing reserves offshore Thailand. Two bottomhole assemblies (BHAs) were designed using rotary steerable systems (RSSs) to drill challenging sections in only two runs and to reduce the risks of stick/slip, vibration, and poor hole quality and wellbore geometries. Featuring several technological and regional firsts, the two engineered drilling systems consisted of a BHA incorporating the PowerDrive Archer high build rate RSS, EcoScope multifunction LWD, and an MDi519LBPX PDC drill bit with PDC cutters; and a BHA incorporating the PowerDrive X6 RSS and PeriScope bed boundary mapper for geosteering. The integrated BHAs were deployed in the Bualuang field in the Gulf of Thailand, where drilling challenges included hole sections with long steep inclinations and severe doglegs.
