Operators in shale plays have traditionally preferred oil-based muds (OBM) that offer the speed and wellbore stability needed to economically and reliably drill, case and complete the long horizontals that maximize reservoir contact. Today, drillers have an option to deploy a high-performance water-based mud (WBM) that costs less, performs similar to OBM, and reduces health, safety and environmental risks.

The HydraGlyde high-performance water-based drilling fluid system developed by M-I SWACO fluids experts provides drillability and wellbore stability comparable to an OBM. Designed to work in temperatures as high as 300 degF, the new system is easy to deploy, is compatible with most additives, and resists contaminants. Moreover, by eliminating the waste transportation and disposal costs associated with OBMs, HydraGlyde reduces the operator’s overall cost per barrel of drilling fluid by 40%.
