The geological and lithological heterogeneity that can exist within a single reservoir requires the application of strategies and tools that provide integrated solutions. Knowing where to drill the laterals and how to stage the fractures are critical to achieving economic success.

An integrated well optimization workflow was applied successfully to bring vertical and horizontal well development pilot projects online in the heterogeneous Delaware Basin, located in the Permian Basin, one of the most important plays in the US. Implementation of the workflow was pivotal to the eventual development of a vertical well project, and subsequent horizontal well development.

The multidisciplinary workflow provided a comprehensive approach to understanding and characterizing the highly heterogeneous reservoir using a full suite of logging tools. Geomechanical and petrophysical models, which were later calibrated, preliminary complex fracture modeling and an advanced flow-channel fracturing technique ensuring that zones with the highest potential were fractured, resulted in the success of the project and paved the way for future development in the formation.
