Many believe the Bakken Shale area is on the verge of serving as a key hub for US and Canadian oil drilling. Innovative technologies are optimizing wellhead production; although logistics and infrastructure struggle to keep pace. Schlumberger has had a service presence in the area for more than 50 years, and is today leveraging recent mergers and acquisitions with existing expertise to deploy new technologies. Integrated drilling capabilities in the Petrel software platform support optimized pad placement and pad well trajectory design. Advanced rotary steerable systems and optimized bits have contributed to halving the time to drill a 10,000-ft lateral within the last four to five years. Efficient fracturing and stimulation techniques reduce downtime and lower the amount of fluids and proppant needed. Remote real-time monitoring by an expert team of engineers provides support and optimization of parameters for rig-site operations.
