After drilling numerous producing wells, an operator in Brazil needed to drill its first water injection well in the Carapebus BMC-8 field. The operator drilled 1,096 m [3,596 ft] of open hole with 9.3-lbm/galUS [1,114-kg/m3] FLOPRO NT water-base reservoir drill-in fluid and completed the well with a 250-um sand control screen. To meet injection targets, it needed a solution to clean up the filtercake deposited by FLOPRO NT fluid.

To remove the filtercake, M-I SWACO recommended a combination of BREAKDOWN breaker system and D-SOLVER D solid chelant agent based on the combination’s pH flexibility. Rigorous laboratory testing confirmed that the fluids would effectively disperse and dissolve various elements of the filtercake, enabling successful injection. After gravel packing with no losses, the operator spotted BREAKDOWN breaker system with D-SOLVER D agent into the well between the sand screen and the formation. The well had an initial head pressure of 40 psi [276,790 N/m2] with a 4,000 bbl/d [26.5 m3/h] injection rate—exceeding customer expectations.
