Friction Stir Welding

MegaStir is a joint venture between Schlumberger and Advanced Metal Products. Although friction stir welding has been a reality for over a decade, high–melting point materials such as steel, stainless steel, nickel-base alloys, and other materials could not be friction stir welded because of tool limitations—until now. Our pioneering advancement of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tool technology, provides the required thermal stability, hardness, and strength needed at elevated temperatures, resulting in a superior weld.

A proprietary solid-state joining process combines cutting and friction to join the chosen alloys quickly and consistently. Increasing materials costs, regulatory pressure, and environmental considerations are driving industry  towards greater use of new alloys. These materials provide for lighter and stronger components but are extremely difficult to join using conventional fusion methods. Our joining technology delivers a consistent, high-strength joint that requires little or no post process clean up, and does not leave a tool exit hole.

This effective, clean, and quick process offers the following advantages over conventional welding and joining techniques:
