Hydraulically Operatated Lockdown RCDs
The high-pressure HOLD RCD features a hydraulically operated lockdown mechanism for the sealing element that can be operated by the driller from a control console placed on the drill floor. This safety feature eliminates the need to send personnel below the drill floor to manually install and release the sealing element, and it shortens replacement time.
The HOLD RCD system includes a hydraulic power unit that supplies oil to the RCD to lubricate and cool the bearings and pressurize the internal seals.
The configuration of the HOLD RCD can be tailored for specific pressure requirements, up to a 5,000-psi static rating, and for specific bearing passthrough diameters, up to 13 3/8 in when the sealing element is removed.
Containment solutions protecting the environment
The HOLD RCD system accommodates installation of a low-pressure protective riser (LPR) on top of the bearing housing. The LPR is a more effective means to protect the environment than a drip pan because it isolates incidental spillage in an extended container above the RCD.
The LPR solution can be further tailored to tie into a bell nipple overshot to provide a fully enclosed interface with the rig circulation system via the rig diverter. This solution provides the means to contain and circulate returning fluid during normal drilling operations when the sealing element is removed.
Features
- Heavy-duty tapered roller bearings for load support and low-torque rotation
- Continuous circulation system to lubricate bearings and seals
- Hydraulic control panel to remotely lock and unlock the sealing element
- Fail-safe locking mechanism that requires hydraulic pressure to open
- Bleed-off lines to vent pressure before sealing element replacement
- Safety interlock system to prevent sealing element release when pressure is present
- Lockdown status light on the drill floor control panel
Advantages
- Rig personnel stay on the rig floor during sealing element removal and replacement.
- The system is compatible with air, mist, foam, and gas drilling operations.
- The LPR allows normal drilling operations to proceed without a sealing element.
- The LPR contains minor spills and protects the environment.
- Pressure sensor in the dual sealing element assembly monitors for signs of wear.
