Heavy Oil
Understanding Heavy Oil
Heavy oil accounts for more than double the resources of conventional oil in the world. We know where heavy oil is and we need heavy oil to satisfy current and future oil demand. For these reasons, heavy oil has become an important theme in our industry with an increasing number of operators getting involved or expanding their plans in this market around the world.
Many types of heavy oil exist and a variety of production processes are being used and developed to recover it. Heavy oil is different, and as a result, many technologies and services used for conventional oil face limitations with these highly viscous oils. To address these needs, Schlumberger offers a wide spectrum of services in the following domains:
Well placement, construction, and completions
Monitoring and control of steam and fluid injection for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes
-
Distributed temperature sensing, pressure monitoring, and data management for steam injection
- Well-to-well cross-resistivity for steam injection profiles in cyclic steam stimulation (huff 'n' puff) and steam flooding
In addition, Schlumberger recognizes these issues of growing importance and offers service and support in the following areas:
- Reduction of footprint with front-end engineering design (FEED) studies
- Monitoring and control for steam management
- High-temperature, energy-efficient completions
- CO2 sequestration
- Environmental compliance, particularly to minimize CO2 impact
Determine optimal extraction, production, and processing methods by analyzing the thermodynamic and physical properties of live and stock-tank heavy oils.
Analyze, model, and monitor geomechanical properties in heavy-oil reservoirs.
ECLIPSE Thermal, together with Petrel software, provides an option for reservoir engineers to address the types of challenges that arise when creating predictive models in the numerical simulator.
