Realizing the full benefit from processing Q data

WesternGeco Q-Technology provides a fundamentally better seismic measurement, providing unique, calibrated input traces without the directivity and averaging of conventional systems. Point-receiver data have little or no directivity, broader bandwidth, higher signal-to-noise, greater horizontal and vertical resolution, improved lateral stability, and are more repeatable than conventional systems.

Enabled by Q

Calibrated point-receiver data enable us to apply certain processes that can only be administered using Q point-receiver seismic acquisition and processing methodology data such as Over/Under Wavefield Separation and Digital Group Forming (DGF) noise attenuation.

Enhanced by Q

The Q approach also maintains fidelity and resolution throughout the entire processing flow: enabling measurable improvements in the final data quality for almost every step in a processing sequence.

For example, minimizing streamer feather along with greater accuracy in positioning source and receivers allows us to sample the wavefield in a more regular manner. This benefits multiple attenuation techniques such as 3D SMP, requiring less aggressive data regularization during pre-conditioning steps.

Other steps greatly enhanced by Q fundamentals include Directional DesignatureCalibrated Marine Source (CMS) and Receiver Motion Compensation (RMC). However in practice every process, benefits from Q data.

Deterministic processing workflows

The Q difference reduces, or eliminates, the errors associated with conventional systems. These errors are not always visible on 3D, but appear on repeat surveys as high levels of 4D noise, and are embedded in all conventional data, causing uncertainties with any amplitude-dependent process such as AVO, velocity analysis, demultiple and inversion.

By combining all these processes into a single sequence we pool the individual benefits, and realize the full potential of processing Q data.
