MetaCarta Geographic Search and Referencing

For the Oil and Gas Industry

It is estimated that more than 80 percent of all business information exists as unstructured data, commonly appearing in reports, contracts, white papers, presentations, research papers, news, Web pages, and memos.

MetaCarta is a unique system that creates a searchable index of geographic locations and keywords—contained within unstructured documents located in disparate data sources and displays them on a map. The MetaCarta Geographic Text Search (GTS) technology combines powerful geographic search with traditional text (keyword) search so you can find content about a place and view that information in a spatially relevant manner.

Integrate Between Document Management and GIS Systems

The MetaCarta geographic search engine is geographically aware. The documents or files scanned by MetaCarta are "geographically indexed" using patented Natural Language Processing (NLP).

MetaCarta spatializes documents based on the following:

  • city and place names
  • geological features (e.g., sedimentary basins)
  • map coordinates (Latitude and Longitude)
  • street addresses
  • relative locations (e.g., 100 miles south-east of Louisiana)
  • E&P entities such as wells, surveys, fields, leases, prospects, and areas (customizable).

Using MetaCarta connectors, targeted crawls of document repositories such as networked drives, document repositories (e.g., Documentum, LiveLink, or SharePoint), Web content, databases, and other content sources can be quickly indexed into the MetaCarta search tool while honoring any document security systems in place.

Add Geographic Intelligence to your Information

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a powerful element of MetaCarta that automatically recognizes geographic terms within the text of a document and determines the appropriate location or locations for that document. By analyzing the full content of the document, MetaCarta can quickly assign the proper location, even when the location name might be ambiguous (e.g., the 75 places in the world called Paris).

The index allows a user to then conduct a search for documents using a traditional text-search interface similar to that of popular search engines. The user enters a series of keywords to locate documents that contain those keywords. The difference is that the results are displayed on the map the user is viewing. The information is therefore automatically filtered based on the geographic information provided in the document and identified by the MetaCarta process. This process is virtually impossible to duplicate with the traditional text search engines.

MetaCarta Energy Industry Products

GTS geOdrive

GTS geOdrive combines the MetaCarta GTS with a GDM specific to the energy industry. GTS geOdrive is tailored to the unstructured content distributed across the enterprise. With the geOdrive Custom Gazetteer, users can enter uncommon and proprietary name/location relationships.

GeoSearch for Petroleum

GeoSearch for Petroleum is location-based intelligence for the energy industry. With an index of more than 4,000 E&P-specific Web sites and 7+ million documents indexed, GeoIntel helps managers, geoscientists, new venture team members, and other oil and gas professionals find locationally relevant E&P insight for a given area in a single search.

IHS Global Oil & Gas Geographic Data Module (GDM)

As an add on to GTS geOdrive for the energy industry, the I.H.S. Geographic Data Module data from worldwide Information Handling Services Group Inc. (IHS) databases to provide positioning information for documents containing references from basins, contracts, fields, leases, and wells to greatly improve the accuracy of MetaCarta for E&P customers.
