Signal-only Matching
Standard matching algorithms assume that the datasets to be matched have consistent signal-to-noise ratio. Where this is not the case, the matching operation will not correctly normalize the datasets. WesternGeco has implemented signal-only global matching and signal-only constrained cross-equalization algorithms to help overcome this problem. The blue line in the left-hand panel of the image on the right shows the amplitude spectrum of a conventional matching operator computed from datasets that have similar signal-to-noise ratios. Additional noise was then added to one of the datasets, and the match operator recomputed, giving the amplitude spectrum shown by the red line. Operators computed using the signal-only approach are shown in the right-hand panel – the spectra of the two operators now match over the usable bandwidth of the data.
