RESINEX II

Premium-grade resinated lignite

Schlumberger Oilfield Services

RESINEX II lignite is a filtration agent and rheological stabilizing additive for all water-based drilling fluids with chlorides below 70,000 mg/L and hardness not exceeding 3,000 mg/L. It will reduce high-temperature fluid loss and stabilize the muds at downhole conditions.

Typical Physical Properties
Physical appearance Black powder
Specific gravity 1.35

Applications

RESINEX II lignite should be used to reduce and maintain low fluid loss in all water-based systems at all densities, and will improve the performance of water-based drilling fluids. RESINEX II additive will not increase viscosity but will stabilize the fluid at increased bottomhole conditions while controlling high-temperature, high-pressure filtration rates. RESINEX II additive is useful to assist in controlling shale stability and hole washout.

RESINEX II lignite should be used at concentrations of 2 to 8 lbm/bbl [5.7 to 22.8 kg/m3] for fluid loss control. To achieve optimal solubility the pH should be adjusted above 10.0. Higher density fluids will require greater concentrations of RESINEX II lignite. For increased bottomhole temperatures, use larger concentrations depending on drilling conditions.

RESINEX II lignite may be presolubilized in a caustic solution and added to the active system as a liquid.

Advantages

  • Bottomhole temperature stabilizer
  • Controls fluid loss in basically all water-based drilling fluids
  • Controls shale stability
  • Does not increase rheology
  • Has higher temperature performance limits than CMC, PAC, or starches

Limitations

  • Maintain pH above 10.0
  • Reduced effectiveness in fluids with chlorides exceeding 70,000 mg/L or hardness above 3,000 mg/L

Toxicity and handling

Bioassay information is available upon request. Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the precautions as described in the safety data sheet (SDS).

Packaging and storage

RESINEX II filtration agent and wellbore stabilizer is packaged in 50-lbm [22.7-kg] multiwall paper sacks. Store in a dry location away from sources of heat or ignition, and minimize dust.
