THINSMART

Water-based drilling fluid thinner

Schlumberger Oilfield Services

Organic, temperature-stable THINSMART water-based drilling fluid thinner controls the rheological and fluid-loss properties of water-based drilling fluids.

Typical Physical Properties
Physical appearance Reddish-brown powder
Specific gravity 1.6–1.8
pH (1% solution) 4–5

Applications

THINSMART thinner deflocculates drill solids and provides fluid-loss control. It reacts with calcium to lessen the contaminating effects on the drilling fluid.

Typical treatment levels are from 1.0 to 6.0 lbm/bbl [2.9 to 17.1 kg/m3]. Initial treatments can be as low as 0.25 lbm/bbl [0.7 kg/m3] depending on the mud weight, bentonite, and drill solids content of the fluid.

Advantages

  • Improved filtration control and filtercake quality
  • Chrome-free makeup
  • Extension of drilling fluid temperature stability
  • Contamination resistance
  • Reduced wall-sticking tendencies
  • Stabilized rheological properties
  • Compatibility with a wide range of water-based systems
  • Effectiveness at temperatures greater than 300 degF [149 degC]

Limitations

Degraded performance in high-salinity fluids. Presolubilize in fresh water treated with caustic soda before adding to the drilling fluid. Maintain a minimum pH of 9.0.

Toxicity and handling

Bioassay information is available upon request. Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the precautions as described in the safety data sheet.

Packaging and storage

THINSMART thinner is packaged in 25-lbm [11.4-kg] multiwall paper sacks. Store in a dry, well-ventilated area. Keep container closed. Store away from incompatibles. Follow safe warehousing practices regarding palletizing, banding, shrink-wrapping, and stacking.
