Schlumberger Awards Scholarships to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists’ Outstanding Student Chapters

Stephen F. Austin State University and University of Aberdeen Named Award Recipients

LONG BEACH, April 24, 2012—Schlumberger announced today its contribution of $3,000 in scholarships to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists’ (AAPG) Outstanding Student Chapter Awards. Two $1,000 scholarships were awarded to the 2012 chapter winners and four $250 scholarships were given to the honorable mention chapters.

Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, was the award recipient among United States–based chapters, and the University of Aberdeen in Scotland was honored as the outstanding international chapter. The honorable mention schools were the University of Utah, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran,” the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember.

Jose de Jesus Gutierrez, marketing and technology manager, Schlumberger Data & Consulting Services, presented the awards to the outstanding student chapters. “Schlumberger is committed to supporting universities around the world that continue to enhance their petroleum geoscience curricula,” said Gutierrez. “We are honored to support AAPG with its student development programs, for these programs will help develop the pipeline of talent needed for the oil and gas industry.”

Stephen F. Austin State University’s student chapter focused on professional integration, educational opportunities and community service. Events included attending lectures and training sessions from leaders in the petroleum industry, volunteering at the AAPG Bookstore during the convention, and organizing community service projects throughout the year. Students also attended AAPG events such as the Student Expos in Norman, Oklahoma, and in Houston, Texas.

The mission of the University of Aberdeen AAPG student chapter is to promote education and networking opportunities within the field of petroleum geology. The chapter’s activities included participating in seminars and technical lectures; launching the “Petroleum Geology in the Heart of Industry” training course, which was jointly hosted with the Bucharest AAPG student chapter; and merging with the Petroleum Exploration Society Great Britain (PESGB) student chapter to create the Aberdeen University joint AAPG and PESGB student chapter.

Currently, AAPG has 252 chapters worldwide. Student chapter requirements for selection of awards are maintenance of student AAPG memberships, active AAPG faculty sponsor, participation in the American Geosciences Institute’s Earth Science Week, field trips, meetings and special community events, and the use of social media to promote their chapter.
