The anticipated announcement of Mozambique’s 6th oil and gas licensing round will promote exploration and production activities, and we have comprehensive data coverage from shallow to deep water that provides insight into the geology offshore Mozambique. Palaeocene and Oligocene submarine channels are targets in the Rovuma Basin; these targets remain a focus in the Mozambique Channel area and extend farther south. Explorationists have also successfully mapped and identified Cretaceous slope- and basin-floor fans.

WesternGeco, in collaboration with the National Petroleum Institute of Mozambique (INP), holds an extensive multiclient 2D and 3D data library of offshore Mozambique ranging from prestacked time migration (PSTM) and prestacked depth migration (PSDM) data to shallow hazard 3D volumes. Available to license, these seismic datasets reveal the hydrocarbon potential of both shallow- and deepwater turbiditic systems. This library of regional seismic coverage enables you to map and derisk the sedimentary architecture of these clastic systems.

The 2D library covers more than 110,000 km of seismic data, including 68,000 km of modern broadband data with infill and 24,000 km of reprocessed legacy surveys using PSTM.

  • Broadband acquisition in 2013 of approximately 37,000 km of seismic data using Q-Marine point-receiver marine seismic system, of which 22,000 km was depth migrated.

The time processing workflow included deghosting, noise attenuation, demultiple, and prestack anisotropic Kirchhoff time migration to provide a clear broadband seismic image of the reservoir targets. These datasets clarify geological uncertainties, especially in deepwater targets, by

  • improving resolution of Tertiary and Cretaceous submarine fans and channels
  • enhancing imaging of Jurassic tilted fault blocks and rift grabens
  • providing further insight regarding the nature of the Biera High and better identifying the continental-oceanic boundary.

Angoche Basin

Working with the INP in 2016, WesternGeco acquired 15,000 km2 of 3D broadband seismic data in the prospective Angoche Basin. The survey covers an open area of 5,000 km2 in addition to the adjacent blocks awarded in the 5th licensing round.

The Angoche 3D seismic data, acquired using IsoMetrix marine seismic technology, provides a significant improvement in both data quality and coverage to highlight prospectivity of the region and reduce risk in the exploration and development phases.

  • 15,000 km2  of data acquired using IsoMetrix technology, providing true 3D broadband data
  • Long-offset data with 8-km streamer
  • Final PSTM volume processed through modern broadband processing workflows, including adaptive deghosting (enhancing the low-frequency information in the data) and the application of adaptive subtraction within the 3D surface-related multiple elimination (SRME) aimed at areas of high-frequency diffracted multiple
  • High-quality depth imaging of over 2,500 km2 of seismic data using a combination of adaptive and least-squares full-waveform inversion and iterations of tomography updates. This accounted for the complexity of the overburden, including mass-transport flows, channels, and thin layers.
  • AVO products that demonstrate the value of broadband processing on angle-dependent amplitudes and derisk deepwater exploration
  • 4,990 km2 of high-resolution shallow hazards cube: 2-ms sampling with 6.25-m × 12.5-m bins to functionally assess possible closures or spill points and better delineate fault planes.
