New Zealand Taranaki Basin

Improve regional geologic understanding and reduce drilling risks

WesternGeco texture hero

10,850 kmof recently acquired 3D broadband data is now available for the northern (4,350 km2) and western platform (6,500 km2) areas of the Taranaki Basin.

The basin is a proven oil and gas province and the only hydrocarbon producing basin in New Zealand. Its complicated basin architecture, recent faulting, and volcanic activity have resulted in highly complex geologic structures.

High-resolution 3D seismic data is needed for operators to improve regional geologic understanding and reduce drilling risks.

Superior imaging of deep structures

We used a calibrated marine seismic source and a specialized sliding-notch broadband acquisition technique to acquire 8-km offset data. The acquisition increased seismic coverage at the edges of the survey and provided full-fold coverage in the shallow waters of the basin. This enabled us to acquire data with rich frequency content for improved imaging of deep structures and sharpened resolution for fault delineation.

Risk reduction

The northern and western platform datasets for the Taranaki Basin include a prestack anisotropic Kirchhoff depth migration using 8-km offsets and a high-resolution velocity model. The broadband nature of the data resulted in reduced residual noise across the full record length and better imaging of shallow amplitude anomalies and complex stratigraphy. Enhanced low frequencies enabled improved imaging of deep basin structures, and the high resolution provided clear imaging of sediment truncation against basement highs.

Seismic inversion products are currently available for the northern Taranaki Basin and the western platform. Our seismic inversion workflow provides

  • AVO angle stacks
  • well-calibrated data with AVO response
  • modeled elastic properties including density, acoustic impedance, and Vp/Vs
  • extracted reservoir geobodies.

When combined with our high-resolution Kirchhoff depth migration, these products significantly reduce your exploration risk in this complex geological setting.
