The application would require the reamer to be activated and deactivated repeatedly to close annular access. Borehole conditions included the potential for kick and losses. Additionally, at a certain point during the test, the operator required the complete deactivation of the reamer's cutter blocks to ensure that the casing shoe would remain set at the correct depth.
For the operation, a Rhino XC on-demand reamer with ONYX PDC cutters was used. The reamer is capable of being reliably activated and deactivated during long circulation times. It can also be surface tested to check and confirm settings and ensure performance prior to being run in the hole.
During 300 circulating hours, the 9,813-ft section was enlarged from 9 1/2 to 10 1/4 in. Postoperational analysis of the run indicated the reamer performed perfectly, meeting all the operational objectives of the application. Upon inspection, the Rhino XC reamer was found to be fully functional, and its ONYX cutters graded excellent.
