A major challenge in prospecting for viable oil and gas is sorting through the data, including seismic data, well and production logs, subsurface measurements, history, documents, and reports.
The open GAIA digital subsurface platform, introduced at the 81st EAGE Conference & Exhibition in June, is Schlumberger's answer to this challenge.
"Our industry deals with data on a huge scale of petabytes, but we often have to compromise with working with so much less of that," says Mariel Herzog, a product analyst with WesternGeco, the seismic and geophysical data solutions division of Schlumberger. "That's because we spend so much time trying to find the data," she continues.
The GAIA platform combines all the data that subsurface teams need together in one place, so they can rapidly evaluate exploration potential, screen prospects, and make more informed drilling decisions.
We caught up with Mariel at SEG 2019 to learn more about the recently introduced platform and what Schlumberger's collaboration with IHS Markit means for users. Click below to watch our full interview from the show.
