Result: Drilled smooth borehole, enabling team to run 7-in liner to bottom; landed within 1 ft TVD of plan; saved 60 hours of rig time at USD 125,000 by drilling longer 12 1/4-in section before kicking off in 8 1/2-in section.

Higher ROP with more vertical section

An operator in the Middle East wanted to drill a 12 1/4-in section without extensive directional drilling work. PowerDrive Archer high build rate RSS offered a solution for reducing drilling time by drilling deeper before kickoff. The first well profile planned a conservative 7.6°/100 ft dogleg severity (DLS) for 846 ft of the 8 1/2-in section, and TD was reached in 25.8 drilling hours, achieving the operator’s objectives.

Given the successful results in the first well, the PowerDrive Archer service was chosen again for the second well, maintaining verticality to a greater depth, drilling faster while making a smoother borehole, and gaining higher build rates than conventional motor technology.

8 1/2-in section drilled in one run, less time

The well was planned with a very aggressive 11.2°/100 ft DLS being consistently required within a 742-ft interval. The 8 1/2-in section was successfully completed in a single run, in just 15 drilling hours, and landed within 1 ft TVD and 3.8 ft laterally. This well profile reduced horizontal displacement from the surface hole to the 7-in liner, enabling the operator to drill more wells with minimal proximity issues to any nearby well.

Saved drilling time and USD 125,000

With the higher build rate achieved in the 8 1/2-in section, verticality was maintained for longer, drilling the 12 1/4-in section faster and pushing kickoff deeper. Because the 8 1/2-in section was shortened, almost 700 ft of liner was saved. The operator’s objectives were met with less footage and with performance drilling in the 12 1/4-in section, saving 2 1/2 days and approximately USD 125,000.

The operator plans six further jobs per year to increase reservoir exposure running PowerDrive Archer RSS.
