Steel-body PDC Bit Targets Shale Drilling

Shale play economics call for close attention to drilling efficiency. The Marcellus Play in the Northeastern US is an example where economics are tight. Typically, horizontal shale wells there are air-drilled to the kick-off point; then a conventional rig is mobilized to drill the build section and the lateral. Looking for ways to cut costs, EOG Resources asked Smith Bits engineering to design the optimal drill bit to drill both sections on a single trip. The result was the 7 7/8-in SDi513 Spear drill bit with its steel-body shale-optimized polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) design. The bit completed the build and lateral sections in 2.7 days less time than average, saving the operator $175,000 in rig time and bit costs.
