Abstract
As part of a joint evaluation of technologies to facilitate reaching reservoirs with complex geologies (thin sands, uncertain dip changes, and unconsolidated sands) and improve operational efficiency, the PDVSA Múcura District carried out a pilot drilling project in the Oficina formation of the Bare field.
High viscosity makes thermal methods necessary to increase the oil recovery factor and achieve PDVSA’s 20% target. In thermal developments, well location within the formation, and therefore use of well-placement techniques, is very important.
This paper describes the years-long evaluation that preceded the project, the technology selected for evaluation, and the project itself—high-rate drilling in a thin, very unconsolidated formation.
